Under The Marble Arch
“Seeing what isn’t there is half the job of being on the Left. The other half is changing what isn’t there through costly, intrusive, and ill-conceived initiatives (save 10 percent for keeping Charlie Rangel out of trouble).” -Abe Greenberg, October 9, 2009
Philosopher's Corner

"With their memories of the sixties, when to be young was very heaven, they still believe that an oppositional stance in pursuit of perfection is virtuous in itself—indeed, is the prime or sole content of virtue. And it is this belief that renders them interesting to Hollander, for it makes genuine moral reflection about the nature of various governments and policies impossible. It transforms merely personal discontents into matters of supposedly great general importance."

-Theodore Dalrymple on Paul Hollander: The Only Superpower: Reflections on Strength, Weakness, and Anti-Americanism

South Korea: Fast Track to Hell

I admire Josh Stanton for two reasons.  He has a noble purpose, which he is pursuing with vigor and intelligence, and he continues his advocacy for freedom, democracy, and human rights in the Koreas, when South Korea, our putative ally, is patently ungrateful, disdainful, spoiled, shortsighted, adolescent and becoming more anti-American with each passing day.

Today he sent me an email letting me know about his latest post.  Josh understands Korean so he was able to listen and understand all of the audio to the two videos he linked.  He warned me: watch this and then hose out your wastebasket.   The videos are APEC (Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation) propaganda that are being distributed to South Korean school children via the Korean Teacher's Union.  You don't have to understand Korean to get the gist.  And "f*ck" isn't Korean anyway, but it may be the only word of English the children ever learn.  And one lengthy segment is entirely in English: Louis Armstrong sings "It's a Wonderful World" while planes crash into the Twin Towers and images of American military blowing Iraqi children to smithereens fill the screen.  I couldn't watch the whole thing.

korea flag burn.jpgIt is very hard for me to wrap my head around the notion that you can live within shooting distance of the most horrific totalitarian society the world had ever known, and still want to embrace the cancer of its ideology.  And yet there are many South Koreans who are doing just that and using disgusting propaganda to shape the ideas of little kids in the same mold.

Gee... I always thought we Euros had the patents for institutionalized stupidity...

I hope you will forgive me, but in a sense I'm glad we are not the only loons.
