Beer Fortunes, Our Fortunes
Tuesday, February 22, 2005 at 08:22AM Economics doesn't have to be the "dismal science." The analysts on staff at QN
have long noted a correlation between the price of Negra Modelo beer and
the price of fuel, and the inverse correlation of beer prices with good
news. In the last two years, the retail price of a six-pack has
gone from less than $6 to a high of $7.99, following closely the upward
price pressure on gasoline. We see signs, however that this trend
is about to be reversed. Forget China's burgeoning economy,
forget the billowing smoke over the Iraqi pipelines; consider this:
- Tony Garza, ambassador to Mexico, announces his engagement to beer exec/heiress Maria Asuncion Aramburuzabala, who heads Grupo Modelo, maker of corona and Negra Modelo beer.
- On the same day, Iraq holds its first elections which are deemed by one and all (except Janeane Garafalo) to be a good thing.
- Jacques Chirac joins Bush to pressure Syria to get out of Lebanon;
- China pressures North Korea to rejoin six-party talks;
- Russia declares Ukraine, Georgia free from Russian orbit;
- The price of gasoline a t the pump steadily goes down, dropping $0.05 in one week
- Paris Hilton interns at a mortuary (we just thought we'd throw that in)
Dow closed down, yesterday, oil closed up and Negra Modelo back above $7.00 a six-pack. QN is waiting for news of the break up of Tony Garza and Maria Asuncion Aramburuzabala.
