Under The Marble Arch
“Seeing what isn’t there is half the job of being on the Left. The other half is changing what isn’t there through costly, intrusive, and ill-conceived initiatives (save 10 percent for keeping Charlie Rangel out of trouble).” -Abe Greenberg, October 9, 2009
Philosopher's Corner

"With their memories of the sixties, when to be young was very heaven, they still believe that an oppositional stance in pursuit of perfection is virtuous in itself—indeed, is the prime or sole content of virtue. And it is this belief that renders them interesting to Hollander, for it makes genuine moral reflection about the nature of various governments and policies impossible. It transforms merely personal discontents into matters of supposedly great general importance."

-Theodore Dalrymple on Paul Hollander: The Only Superpower: Reflections on Strength, Weakness, and Anti-Americanism

May Day, May Day

We didn't forget International Labor Day, we just gave it its due, that is, we ignored it.  But and however, there are plenty of people who "celebrated" it, among them zillions of South Koreans who marched with little banners that read "We'd rather die" Hold Your Breath...keep holdong...holding
Hold Your Breath...keep holding...holding

and they don't mean "Better Dead than Red."  We think they mean "Reds are better  Dead" and we couldn't agree more.   As everyone knows, Quid Nimis is the only blog in our galaxy that categorizes its humorous pieces under the name  "Death of Communism" because that thought will bring us out of our most despairing moments like nothing else.  We even have a picture of Vlad the Impaler (Lenin) here, in all of his moribund glory.  He looks so peaceful; he could be asleep!  OK, he could be asleep in his Herman Munster makeup.  We even have other pictures on file of Pol Pot and Che Guevara.  che-alarmacrop.jpgPP wasn't any too handsome in life and death only made him more attractive in the way that death makes some people much more attractive.  His corpse was too nasty for this blog.  Che, on the other hand, was a picture of bloody repose, all serene after a hard afternoon of cowering and (unsuccessfully) dodging bullets.  Kinda makes you want to be the mortician in charge, though:  razor and clippers in hand, and a tube of Joan Crawford Red Lipstick...oooh, baby!Carmen Miranda-foto5.jpg

We think Stacy and Clinton would approve.

The Best Portrait of Che
They used to say that the only good Red is a Dead One. When they nailed Che, it was a happy day to my way of thinking, but it did not stop the spread of communism in South America. The so-called Cuban doctors have done their dirty work and now Chavez is selling the oil to Castro, and both of them split the profits. They're now the biggest theives in the hemisphere, beating out the Enron boys by far.
