Under The Marble Arch
“Seeing what isn’t there is half the job of being on the Left. The other half is changing what isn’t there through costly, intrusive, and ill-conceived initiatives (save 10 percent for keeping Charlie Rangel out of trouble).” -Abe Greenberg, October 9, 2009
Philosopher's Corner

"With their memories of the sixties, when to be young was very heaven, they still believe that an oppositional stance in pursuit of perfection is virtuous in itself—indeed, is the prime or sole content of virtue. And it is this belief that renders them interesting to Hollander, for it makes genuine moral reflection about the nature of various governments and policies impossible. It transforms merely personal discontents into matters of supposedly great general importance."

-Theodore Dalrymple on Paul Hollander: The Only Superpower: Reflections on Strength, Weakness, and Anti-Americanism

Flip-flop Bottle Top Popper

Fanning_GRN_2.jpgReef has come out with a flip-flop style that has a built-in bottle opener called the Mick Fanning (a famous surfer dude from down under, don't you know).  This is brilliant! But the production staff  at QN has a couple of quibbles:

  • They don't come in women's styles
  • They didn't come out in time for the 2004 election

Tree Hugger Tug-O'-War

beautystep.JPG Susanne and Christian Birkenstock are splitsville, although that isn't the news.  She's started her own company with a line of "healthy" sandals and shoes that purportedly get rid of cellulite.  She has called it "BeautyStep" but in her promotional material she uses her married name liberally, so to speak, causing an amicable split to become less amicable.  Like, who cares?  The shoes are ugly.  The Wall Street Journal reported all this today in the "fluff news" center article.  We stopped reading after they mentioned Herr Birkie's castle-on-the-Rhein-overlooking-the-ruins-of-the-Remagen-Bridge for the third time.

Editorial note: QN wants to develop a line of fashionable slides that have a built in bottle opener and an Ipod Shuffle clip complete with Mariachi tunes and a tie -in with Negro Modelo for discounts on beer.  THAT is what we call healthy footwear.
