Under The Marble Arch
“Seeing what isn’t there is half the job of being on the Left. The other half is changing what isn’t there through costly, intrusive, and ill-conceived initiatives (save 10 percent for keeping Charlie Rangel out of trouble).” -Abe Greenberg, October 9, 2009
Philosopher's Corner

"With their memories of the sixties, when to be young was very heaven, they still believe that an oppositional stance in pursuit of perfection is virtuous in itself—indeed, is the prime or sole content of virtue. And it is this belief that renders them interesting to Hollander, for it makes genuine moral reflection about the nature of various governments and policies impossible. It transforms merely personal discontents into matters of supposedly great general importance."

-Theodore Dalrymple on Paul Hollander: The Only Superpower: Reflections on Strength, Weakness, and Anti-Americanism

Blogging on the Fly: Saddam Coverage Hits Below the Belt

The Sunday shows, every last one of them as far as we can tell, commented on the pictures of Saddam in his jockeys. We want to go on record that we think that these photographs are a violation of his rights under the Geneva Convention, that they violate cultural norms for modesty, they are degrading and do not reflect American values and are a total breach of military discipline. We would also like to observe:

  1. Woo woo, ooh baby, lookin' good.
  2. So now millions of MTVers have the answer to their burning question (go to #2).
  3. So they're men's undies and they're not on his head.  This is progress?
  4. We have discovered the final frontier: the news story that Al-Jazeera deemed too offensive to air in Iraq.  Yes, folks, the station that has brought hostage videos, beheadings, and dead American soldiers to the Arab street and beyond, adjudges "Captain Underpants"  unnewsworthy and undignified.
