Prosit: We like
her already
We learn from
John Fund of Opinion Journal that
Angela Merkel will be
Germany's new chancellor come the fall. OK, perhaps we're getting
a little ahead of ourselves, but she is the leader of the Christian
Democrats who trounced Gerhard Schroeder's Social Dems this
weekend. John makes and excellent point about why Schroeder
lost. The spin is that the Germans are upset about his so-called
austerity measures (we even heard this on NPR.) But if that were true,
then the Greens would have gained support, which they certainly did
not.
David's Medienkritik and Mr. Fund and The New Republic
have all commented on the vicious anti-Americanism that Schroeder has
used to gain votes. But this time it didn't work.
