Forced Conversions: Egypt
Monday, June 20, 2005 at 04:37PM We found this very disturbing post on the blog of Orthodoxy Today.
It is about young adults being abducted in Egypt and forced to convert
to Islam. No, they aren't being taken by some extremist Islamist
group, unless you would describe the Egyptian government as such.
The post is primarily the story of the kidnapping of Neveen Morcos, 19,
of Alexandria, Egypt. She was a deeply devout Christian, planning
to become a nun, and was on her way to a religious retreat when she
went missing. After eight days had elapsed, during which time the
family notified the police and searched frantically for her, they were
notified by the State Security Office that Neveen wanted to
convert. Two Orthodox priests were ordered to come to talk to
her, evidently so that she could convince them that she was sincere, in
what is called a "religious guidance session." The priests were
not convinced : she appeared frightened and under pressure and possibly
drugged (her answers were slow and out of sync with the questions.
the family is pleading for help in publicizing Neveen's plight, as
well as that of the other victims. Please get the word out.
For further information, please call her sister Susan at 011 20127042806
