It was sunset, the glow of evening and the soft spring breeze enveloped us as we chattered to each other about our day. He was so solicitous, so interested in the garden that I had lovingly tended and we both anticipated the coming season when the new beds would fulfill this Springtime promise.

He reached out for me, drew back my hair and tenderly stroked my cheek...

Scratch that.  He reached out and, brushing my hair aside, flicked at my cheek.

"What are you doing?"

"Oh, I thought it was dirt but I guess you have a zit,"  he said, flicking again rather more vigorously.

"Where?" I asked, feeling the spot on my cheekbone below the outer corner of my right eye. Nothing there but the two small moles that had always been there.

"Right here." He was touching the larger mole.

"That's a mole!"

"Oh yeah? How long has that been there?"

Twenty years. We've known each other for twenty years. My face has been exposed that whole entire time.

"Since birth," I growled.

"No!"

I turned and walked towards the trees. I looked heavenward and raised my arms to the Almighty and screamed,

"SINCE BIRTH!"
