“Seeing what isn’t there is half the job of being on the Left. The other half is changing what isn’t there through costly, intrusive, and ill-conceived initiatives (save 10 percent for keeping Charlie Rangel out of trouble).” -Abe Greenberg, October 9, 2009
Philosopher's Corner

"With their memories of the sixties, when to be young was very heaven, they still believe that an oppositional stance in pursuit of perfection is virtuous in itself—indeed, is the prime or sole content of virtue. And it is this belief that renders them interesting to Hollander, for it makes genuine moral reflection about the nature of various governments and policies impossible. It transforms merely personal discontents into matters of supposedly great general importance."

A.M. Siriano: Congratulations

Mr. Siriano, a poet oft cited on this blog, sent me a note the other day informing me that his poem, "Dirty Words," has been accepted for publication.  This is the first time he has been published in a non-electronic medium and I know this is something of a milestone, so congratulations are definitely in order.

Purpose
In his communication with me, he called it a stupid little poem but it isn't.  True, it isn't "heavy," but it's nicely done and I knew which one it was even though I had read it months ago. But if you were to ask me which I would publish before "Dirty Words," there are a number that I like very much, including "Purpose" which directly follows "Dirty Words." in his collection, "September Poems."

"Hopeless" "Sound and Video" and "The Boy" are among the many that are very appealing but don't take my word for it: Mr.  Siriano's poetry is very accessible, so go look.

I liked it, too, obviously. But the real test of whether you are a highly cultivated and literate Belgian or a culture monster is if you actually read any of the poetry. Mr. Siriano is a conservative who would rival you, Mikey, and he's a fan of the Brussels Journal. So go read his poetry.
