Under The Marble Arch
“Seeing what isn’t there is half the job of being on the Left. The other half is changing what isn’t there through costly, intrusive, and ill-conceived initiatives (save 10 percent for keeping Charlie Rangel out of trouble).” -Abe Greenberg, October 9, 2009
Philosopher's Corner

"With their memories of the sixties, when to be young was very heaven, they still believe that an oppositional stance in pursuit of perfection is virtuous in itself—indeed, is the prime or sole content of virtue. And it is this belief that renders them interesting to Hollander, for it makes genuine moral reflection about the nature of various governments and policies impossible. It transforms merely personal discontents into matters of supposedly great general importance."

-Theodore Dalrymple on Paul Hollander: The Only Superpower: Reflections on Strength, Weakness, and Anti-Americanism

Peggy Sue...for Divorce

Sometimes people, my friends mostly, send me stuff that they think I'll enjoy.  One fellow sends me everything that Theodore Dalrymple writes, for which I am deeply grateful.  I'm doubly grateful, because that particular friend sort of counter-balances another friend, I'll call her "Louise," who sends me stuff like this:

Heather_041607.jpgSir Paul and Stella’s one-legged insults.  While he may’ve stopped short of calling her “Peggy,” Sir Paul McCartney isn’t above having a laugh at his one-legged ex-wife’s expense, reports Digital Spy. Nor, for that matter, is his famous designer daughter Stella. In a phone conversation recorded by Heather Mills, Paul and Stella allegedly shared a laugh over Heather’s amputated appendage.  “What (Heather) says she heard Sir Paul say on the tape about her amputated leg left her incandescent with rage,” Heather’s friend reported. “She says he used an insulting slang word about disabled people. That he and Stella — her archenemy — had a laugh about it. Heather was — and still is — seething about it.”

So, if he didn't call her "Peggy," what did he call her?  Help me out here, folks.  I'm stumped.
