Under The Marble Arch
“Seeing what isn’t there is half the job of being on the Left. The other half is changing what isn’t there through costly, intrusive, and ill-conceived initiatives (save 10 percent for keeping Charlie Rangel out of trouble).” -Abe Greenberg, October 9, 2009
Philosopher's Corner

"With their memories of the sixties, when to be young was very heaven, they still believe that an oppositional stance in pursuit of perfection is virtuous in itself—indeed, is the prime or sole content of virtue. And it is this belief that renders them interesting to Hollander, for it makes genuine moral reflection about the nature of various governments and policies impossible. It transforms merely personal discontents into matters of supposedly great general importance."

-Theodore Dalrymple on Paul Hollander: The Only Superpower: Reflections on Strength, Weakness, and Anti-Americanism

Too Much to Blog, Too Little Time

Yes, it's speedblogging on Friday!

Just over the transom: Heard toasters are now giving away free banks.  Bada bam!

I understand from someone I'm closely related to that the Federal Government HAD to force all of the solvent banks to accept a partial ownership deal because they weren't lending even to each other and so had effectively frozen all credit.  As he put it, it was a measure of last resort.  My response: the measure before that was the measure of last resort.  Charles Krauthammer's response: in the banana republics, there's usually a gun on the conference table when this happens.  I actually don't understand people who look at the market crisis and think that any takeover by the Federal Government is justified.  Did World War II justify the internment of hundreds of thousands of citizens?  And what justified "Kelo?"  The Government, at all levels, is becoming more brazen about taking property.   I wonder now about all of the folks on the left who have been bleating incessantly for 7 years about how their civil rights have been eroded because of Bush and Homeland Security.  In one stroke, we have seen fundamental rights stripped in a way that will completely alter our function as a nation, and truly change our identity, our understanding of our relationship to government.  And, as an added bonus, Bush and Paulson have done half of Obama's job for him.  They got him and the Democrats to the doorway of socialism.  Chip says to Dale, "No, AFTER YOU!"

Thanks, George.
