“Seeing what isn’t there is half the job of being on the Left. The other half is changing what isn’t there through costly, intrusive, and ill-conceived initiatives (save 10 percent for keeping Charlie Rangel out of trouble).” -Abe Greenberg, October 9, 2009
Philosopher's Corner

"With their memories of the sixties, when to be young was very heaven, they still believe that an oppositional stance in pursuit of perfection is virtuous in itself—indeed, is the prime or sole content of virtue. And it is this belief that renders them interesting to Hollander, for it makes genuine moral reflection about the nature of various governments and policies impossible. It transforms merely personal discontents into matters of supposedly great general importance."

-Theodore Dalrymple on Paul Hollander: The Only Superpower: Reflections on Strength, Weakness, and Anti-Americanism

Stop the Smears: American Issues Project

The Obama campaign is calling for proscecution of The American Issues Project for airing this ad about BO:

Obama's general counsel Bob Bauer and Harold Simmons, the man funding the ad, are in quite a pissing match.  This is more of the strategy that spawned "Stop the Smears" and other rapid reponse efforts.  The Obama Campaign is hitting back at every attack, and hitting with all it has, however much a waste of resources and a distraction to the campaign.  McCain is successfully exploiting this preoccupation with hitting back by continuing many small attacks, during the convention.  As Bill Kristol observes, this appears to be getting into the heads of the Obama people and causing them to veer off message.  This weakness in the Obama campaign appears to be a combination of learning from the mistakes of the Kerry campaign and an  expression of the candidates personal sensitivity.  He has a "glass jaw" that was revealed early on by Maureen Dowd's 'big ears' comment and his response.  That he and his people really can't get "above politics" just shows how fragile that message and his ego are.

McCains guerilla tactics should soon have Obama's head spinning faster than Linda Blair's.

If this qualifies as the 'politics of personal destruction' (a phrase constructed to protect the Left, to whom all politics are personal), then I'm all for it.
