Sharia Law: From the Archbishop's Mouth to Parliament's Ears
Thursday, September 25, 2008 at 09:02AM Cinnamon Stillwell of Campus Watch has neatly brought together the threads of a disturbing trend that appears to be gaining momentum. I recently read a rather favorable review of John Esposito's book, Who Speaks for Islam? What a Billion Muslims Really Think but wondered about the fundamental grandiosity of the title, as well as the author, who has a rep, shall we say. He is the head of the Prince Alaweed Center for Muslim Christian Understanding at Georgetown, and didn't get there because he was a dispassionate critic.
One gets the feeling these days that we in the West are being subjected to a "soft" approach to swaying our ideas about Islam. If we sit around and read a scientific analysis of Muslim opinion, we could almost be lulled into thinking, really, it's not as serious as all that. The competing visions for society, justice, governance: there really isn't any difference that we can't reconcile. John Esposito is a major proponent of this bit of propaganda, and, I'm sorry to say, liberal Christian denominations are going right along. That party at the Hyatt for Mahmoud Ahmadinejad? It's an "interfaith" reception given by liberal Christians. Sharia courts are now being established in Britain, only months after the Archbishop of Canterbury opined that they were "desirable" and inevitable.
Ms. Stillwell's article is an excellent resource of links to reviews and news articles, well worth the time to read through.
