I woke and saw that life was Duty.
I acted, and behold, Duty was Joy."
Rabindranath Tagore

"The skepticism about human rationality that science inspires should not be taken as support for authoritarianism or paternalism… On the contrary, it should render questionable all claims to wise and disinterested leadership, including those of America’s own altruistic progressive technocrats who propose policies to “nudge” the unenlightened masses into doing the right thing. It makes more sense to think of our leaders and intellectuals as half-crazed hooting howler monkeys — just like the rest of us."
Michael Lind, Salon, August 23,2011
“Seeing what isn’t there is half the job of being on the Left. The other half is changing what isn’t there through costly, intrusive, and ill-conceived initiatives (save 10 percent for keeping Charlie Rangel out of trouble).” -Abe Greenberg, October 9, 2009
“To date, what non-Obama voters see, and fear, is a candidate content to coast to the nomination and then conduct a blandly conservative campaign. They want a more substantive choice than that. They want to have it out over the worth or danger of Barack Obama’s ideas. They want the chance to ratify Washington’s enormous long-term claims on the country’s wealth, or decisively reject them." – Daniel Henninger, WSJ, July 21, 2011

Giving

I know, everyone has already "done" their end-of-year charitable contribs, right?  Well, here are a couple of suggestions and I want all of you to buck convention and go ahead and give at the beginning of the year.  $20 can change the life of someone who is living from meal to meal and risking life and limb just to get firewood.  A blanket or a shovel can be someone's prized possession and could make all the difference for the survival of the children.  And no one cares if you send a check that's dated December 31.

Ok, how liberal/leftist is that first group? How much money actually reaches these people? I fear anything with the word "Berkeley" in it.

A reasonable question. The Berkeley-Darfur Stove was developed by a physicist at Berkeley spcifically in response to the needs of the refugee. It's quite brilliant. Its design characteristics are tailored to the needs of the people and to the windy environment of the region.
Here is the story of the invention: http://www.bioenergylists.org/en/berkeley-darfurstove
This explains the design: http://www.darfurstoves.org/darfur-stove/

If you go to the link for the Hunger Site, you'll notice that they tell you how much of your donation goes to the Stove Project. $20 subsidizes the stove- the recipient has to ante up $10 on his own to discourage him from selling the stove for scrap.

Both the design and the donation structure impressed me as excellent. There are other sites that also distribute the stove, but I like this one the best because of transparency.

Thanks for asking!
