Under The Marble Arch
“Seeing what isn’t there is half the job of being on the Left. The other half is changing what isn’t there through costly, intrusive, and ill-conceived initiatives (save 10 percent for keeping Charlie Rangel out of trouble).” -Abe Greenberg, October 9, 2009
Philosopher's Corner

"With their memories of the sixties, when to be young was very heaven, they still believe that an oppositional stance in pursuit of perfection is virtuous in itself—indeed, is the prime or sole content of virtue. And it is this belief that renders them interesting to Hollander, for it makes genuine moral reflection about the nature of various governments and policies impossible. It transforms merely personal discontents into matters of supposedly great general importance."

-Theodore Dalrymple on Paul Hollander: The Only Superpower: Reflections on Strength, Weakness, and Anti-Americanism

Gather Ye Schadenfreude Whilst Ye May

We have to live with the outrage/embarrassment/imbecility of DeDe Scozzafava's candidacy (Mark Steyn captures my feelings perfectly) but at least the Democrats have Creigh Deeds.  "Creigh" is Gaelic for "Hapless."  This letter to the Wall Street Journal is from a supporter....

Regarding Kimberley A. Strassel's "Creigh Deeds's Union Label," (Potomac Watch, Oct. 16): Many of us who believe Creigh Deeds would be an outstanding governor are heartsick over his deficiencies as a candidate. He has a high, almost delicate voice and a speaking style often charitably described as "choppy." He is way too pro-gun for liberal Democrats, but not quite pro-gun enough for the NRA. In addition, Mr. Deeds has failed to develop a strong campaign organization.

In short, he's a bowling pin—and the ball coming at him is a suave, smooth-talking Christian conservative who is outspending him by about two-to-one.

Under the circumstances, Mr. Deeds's union ties may be his biggest asset.
