Under The Marble Arch
“Seeing what isn’t there is half the job of being on the Left. The other half is changing what isn’t there through costly, intrusive, and ill-conceived initiatives (save 10 percent for keeping Charlie Rangel out of trouble).” -Abe Greenberg, October 9, 2009
Philosopher's Corner

"With their memories of the sixties, when to be young was very heaven, they still believe that an oppositional stance in pursuit of perfection is virtuous in itself—indeed, is the prime or sole content of virtue. And it is this belief that renders them interesting to Hollander, for it makes genuine moral reflection about the nature of various governments and policies impossible. It transforms merely personal discontents into matters of supposedly great general importance."

-Theodore Dalrymple on Paul Hollander: The Only Superpower: Reflections on Strength, Weakness, and Anti-Americanism

Courting the Hispanic Vote

The GOP has had problems gaining traction with much of the Hispanic community, with the notable exception of the Cubans.

I see a career move for Mark Sanford.  It turns out one of his pre-The-Big-Nasty trysts was a coffee date at the Republican convention.

And re Mark Sanford, I wish I'd written this.  According to the AP interview, which lasted two days, he was highly emotional and cried a lot.  It reminds me of a commercial about identity theft where there's a hairy layabout with the voice of a young female ditz talking about buying a bustier.**  Mark Sanford is a grown man who's inner child is a hormonal teenaged girl who's found the keys to the car.  Pathetic.

I won't read the AP story. I read that he cried and that was enough to make me cringe. What an utter embarrassment he is.
If I were a liberal I would make the argument that perhaps this Argentinian woman, as a wise Latina, with her richness of experiences, brought Sanford to a better sexual conclusion than his American wife, who hasn’t lived that life...
