The speech on the lawn on Friday was incoherent. I've been baraged with stuff from "Team Sarah," from which I am unsubscribing.

I heard some of the most nauseating apologia about her "genius" from the die-hards. Sorry: this is getting into the Celebrity Warp and I want no part of it.

If she works hard and proves herself, great. But right now, the whole scene is a little too dramatic for me. She needs to prove herself to be sensible and steady, and if she's really doing this for her family, why not hit the books half-days, and be a mom to the little ones, be a wife to Todd for the other half, and give them a break from the public eye for a few months? Instead, she's writing on Facebook that the "inside" crowd and the media are holding her to a different standard and she's giving interviews on Fox. Give me a break. Please.

My mother, she of the Ph.D. in History, used to LOVE romance novels. She's read all of the Barbara Cartland oeuvre in Portuguese, because, believe it or not, it's a great way to brush up on your idioms because the books are formulaic and repetitive. I was the only person in all of my Portuguese classes in college who knew how to say, "Wrinkled her brow.." in Portuguese ("frangiu a testa," if you must know). She once lent me a book that she thought was great- a historical bodice-ripper about an Irish princess who marries an icky nobleman against her will but is kidnapped along with her trusty Irish Wolfhound on her wedding night before her icky husband gets the goods, by pirates who rape her and take her to North Africa and sell her into white slavery ("...she comes with the dog! Two for one! Now how much would you expect to pay for this feisty Gaelic gal?!") ... all by page 17. I kid you not. I couldn't finish it. It was 700 pages long.
